Granada

Granada is located at an altitude of 738 meters above sea level, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Centuries ago it was the capital of the Taifa Granada and the Kingdom of Granada. Now the province and the city are mainly known for olive farming and of course the Alhambra, a Moorish palace that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The same applies to the Albaicín and the Generalife. Granada Cathedral with the burial chapel of the Catholic royal couple (Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile) is one of the largest churches in Spain. The cultural wealth of the city, with influences from the Moors, Jews and Catholics, makes Granada one of the most important cultural centers of Spain.

The “Universidad de Granada”, founded in 1531, is one of the most prestigious in the country, and has, among other things, contributed to Granada’s image as a student city.

The city’s patron saint is San Cecilio, and the associated bank holiday falls on February 1 every year. The Albaicín district and the Sacromonte are known for (gypsy) flamenco: many greats from this world were born here or started their careers here.
