Montefrio

Montefrio was one of the first civilizations on the Iberian Peninsula. About the year 4500 B.C. the first settlements arose around this place. Remains of it can still be found today, especially in the area of the Peña de los Gitanos, on the road to Íllora.

The settlements survived despite the remoteness of Montefrio, which is surrounded by several mountain ranges. This was due to the flourishing agriculture, including olive trees and livestock farming.

Montefrio grew in Roman times. Several generals (such as Cayo Sempronio and Cayo Flaminio) used the village as a strategic enclave to set up camps. Montefrio continued to grow even after the Roman period. Under the leadership of the Visigoths, some larger buildings were constructed, which still exist today.
