According to legend, in 711 the Moorish army commander Tariq won the battle in this area that paved the way to conquer the Iberian peninsula from Morocco. In this nature reserve the river makes its last kilometers to the sea and otters and ospreys have their hunting grounds. Migratory birds rest here on their journey to Africa, a colony of storks nests in the pine trees on the hills. On a clear day you can see the hills around Tangier and the Rif Mountains behind.

Golf enthusiasts have a choice of golf courses at Benalup and Chiclana. Surfers and kite surfers have the beaches around Cape Trafalgar or at Tarifa. In Barbate and Tarifa you can enjoy diving, and whale watching in the Strait of Gibraltar. Taking the fast ferry from Tarifa to Morocco to visit Tangier or Asilah is a holiday experience in itself!
