Serranía de Ronda
Serranía de Ronda is the mountain area near the spectacularly located Ronda. In this vast nature reserve there is a white village here and there, the mountains reach up to 1,900 meters and the Rio Genal has carved out a beautiful valley. The combination of friendly and rugged environments make Ronda and its surroundings a wonderful holiday destination in Andalusia.
Ronda
Ronda is a medium-sized city with many historical sites. You can take a nice walk to view and visit different historic buildings. There is even a former minaret from Moorish times to admire. The Moorish baths also date from the same time. These are definitely worth a visit. They are just outside the city wall.
If you take a walk on the city wall, you will automatically reach the point where you can admire the different bridges that span the gorge of Ronda. In the city there are several squares where you can order a tapa, and there are also several good restaurants.
The region of Serranía de Ronda is located about 47 kilometers from San Pedro de Alcantara on the Costa del Sol. Head up the winding roads into the mountains behind the coast and you will arrive at one of the most stunning natural landscapes, mountain ranges punctuated by plains stretching as far as the eye can see.
History
The city of Ronda dates back to the Neolithic era and is one of the most important cultural centers of Andalusia, if not all of Spain. It is the largest city in the Serrania de Ronda; although it is still a relatively small town. Ronda is the birthplace of bullfighting and home to one of the most important bullrings in Spain. There is a museum attached to it, where you can learn a lot about the history of the sport.
Arab baths
Ronda’s old town has a distinct Moorish influence; visit the restored Arab Baths (Baños Arabes) and the Madragon Palace, which was originally home to the Moorish kings, during their reign. Most visitors will initially head to the Nuevo Puente (New Bridge), which splits the city in two. Here you can enjoy the spectacular view over the plains, or you can admire the 100 meter descent to the river Guadalevin, only if you are not afraid of heights!
Serrania de Ronda is a fairly mountainous area, where you will find some of the most beautiful pueblos blancos (white villages) in Andalusia. There are in total more than 20 villages.
